MURRAY, Ky. 鈥 Murray State University proudly announces that Dr. Ed Thome, associate professor and former chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department, has been awarded the prestigious 2025-2026 Neil Weber Award for Excellence in the Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology (JCSET).
The Weber Award was established as a special tribute to former college dean Neil Weber after his retirement from Murray State University. The endowment for this award was provided through a generous gift by the late Dr. Jesse D. Jones, a JCSET alumnus who was a strong supporter of Murray State faculty and students and one who shared the University鈥檚 commitment to excellence in math and science education.
Recipients are chosen by a committee, with selection based on the nominee鈥檚 achievements in several areas, including outstanding service and contributions to the University through academic research grants and development, classroom activities, student recruitment, governmental relations, publications, program leadership and/or assistance with matters of accreditation. Recipients receive a $2,500 stipend for the next academic year to be used for research, conferences, travel or other projects.
鈥淒r. Thome served as department chair for 15 years. During that time, he instigated and oversaw curriculum changes that have helped numerous students gain a solid footing in math, allowing them to progress in their degrees. Moreover, he has taken those ideas to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, becoming one of the state鈥檚 most esteemed math education proponents. He recently returned to the faculty to allow him more time to devote to this mission and continues to blaze a trail in math education statewide. In addition, he is a much loved mathematics professor and academic advisor by students university-wide,鈥 said Dr. Claire Fuller, dean of the Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology.
A dedicated member of the Murray State faculty since 1991, Thome has taught a wide range of courses from introductory mathematics to advanced graduate-level topics. A respected scholar in abstract harmonic analysis, multipliers, function spaces, and measure theory, he has published research, presented at national conferences, and mentored a plethora of undergraduate and graduate students through theses and research projects. Beyond the classroom, Thome has provided exceptional leadership, serving as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics since 2009, president of the Faculty Senate, and a member of numerous committees dedicated to curriculum development, retention and student success. His contributions to teacher preparation, curriculum innovation and mathematics education reform have extended throughout Kentucky and the region.
鈥淚 would like to express my appreciation of the generosity of Jesse D. Jones in endowing the Neil Weber award in recognition of the leadership of Dr. Neil Weber. In addition, I thank my colleagues who saw value in what I have been working towards and then nominated me for this award. I am proud to be a part of Murray State, whose faculty and staff truly care about our students,鈥 said Thome.
The Neil Weber Award recognizes Thome鈥檚 outstanding achievements, tireless service and unwavering dedication to the advancement of mathematics education at Murray State University and beyond.
